Eliminate Floaters using Laser
Brimhall Eye provides the most advanced treatments and procedures available to patients. Our goal is to ensure each one of our patients has access to the quality of care they want and need. One of the ways we can help you is by eliminating the presence of floaters in your vision. When you visit your Las Vegas eye doctor for an exam, we’ll talk to you about floaters and how our advanced laser treatment may be able to help you.
What Are Eye Floaters?
Eye floaters are not uncommon, but they can be bothersome. They are noticeable areas of your vision that seem to have spots floating around. They are commonly seen when looking into a bright environment, looking at a computer or TV screen, or looking into the sky. Floaters, in most cases, are harmless. However, they can limit your ability to see well. That’s why you’ll need to come in for an eye exam with your ophthalmologist to learn more about the treatment options we can offer to you.
Most commonly, floaters are clusters of material that move around the inside area of the middle eye. Floaters are typically small specs, but they can look like threats or moving lines as well. You’ll notice them when your eyes stop moving – they seem to dart out of the way when you try to look at them directly.
What Causes Them?
They often occur when the vitreous jelly located in the middle of the eye shrinks. This substance, which is like a gel, fills about 80 percent of the space within the eye. It aids in keeping the eye’s shape. Over time, it begins to shrink naturally. In some cases, it can become stringy and becomes more noticeable.
Your Ophthalmology Team’s Laser Surgery Can Help
When you visit your ophthalmology office, your ophthalmologist will conduct a thorough eye exam to learn more about your eye condition. From eye exams like this, we can determine what the best approach to improving your vision is. For many with floaters, the best treatment is laser surgery. We offer that in our office.
During this procedure, which takes about 15 minutes, we’ll dilate your eyes to open them up. We will then use a high-powered laser light applied to the eyes. This works to break up the floaters. We’ll use a lens designed to filter the laser light. It does not damage the eyes or vision. However, the YAG laser treatment works very quickly to break up the floaters you typically see. After the procedure, you’ll be able to go back to doing the things you need to with no down time. Most patients do very well with the YAG laser procedure. If complications occur, they are generally mild and treatable.
