Do You Need Cataract Surgery?
Do you think you may need cataract surgery? If you do, you're certainly not alone. This procedure is one of the most common surgical ones in the country. It is also one of the safest and quickest, taking only a few minutes to do, and it has immediate results in significantly improving your vision right away. If you need cataract surgery, our office can perform it for you. We even offer a custom surgery option, which gives you longer lasting quality vision than the traditional method of removing cataracts from the eyes.
You may need cataract surgery if the lens in one or more of your eyes has become cloudy. Everyone has a lens in each eye, and they are usually clear, which allows us to see clearly and sharply through them. If the lens becomes cloudy with accumulated proteins, it makes things appear blurry, and eventually opaque, if it is left on the eye. While cataracts may have a genetic component, they seem to be mostly a product of aging, so it is not unusual for them to begin appearing as early as your fifties, and maybe even sooner in some people. The good news is that they are easy to remove, and when they are gone, your good, clear vision is restored.
How are Cataracts Removed?
Cataracts have been removed by trained doctors since at least ancient Roman times. However, we now have the advantage of modern technology to make the procedure easier, safer, painless, and extremely effective. Done by a properly trained eye doctor, cataract surgery restores normal vision almost one hundred percent of the time.
Your ophthalmologist does the surgery using a microscope, tiny instruments, and a highly targeted ultrasound machine to break up the cataract into pieces, and then remove all the pieces. This procedure is a standard one in the field of ophthalmology.
Once the cataract is broken up and removed, an artificial lens is inserted into the eye using the tiniest of incisions; it becomes flexible and stays in place. Stitches are rarely required because the incisions made to insert the lens are so small.
To make this surgery even more effective, custom surgery can now be performed. This is done using advanced technology and detailed to your own, unique needs, as each person's cataract situation is different. There is less chance of you needing to wear glasses or contacts after custom cataract surgery. Your eye doctor will take the time to get to know your needs and goals intimately, then craft a custom plan for cataract removal based on them.
