Brimhall Eye Center Can Help With Hard-To-Fit Contact Lenses

Every individual is different, and small differences in the shape of the cornea at the front of the eyes can make getting a good fit a more difficult process. A poor contact lens it can lead to eye pain, itching, excessive tearing, a feeling of something in the eye or poor vision. At Brimhall Eye Center in Las Vegas, NV, we use the most current technology for corneal measurement to ensure a comfortable fit for hard-to-fit patients.

Why Are Some Individuals Hard To Fit For Contact Lenses?

Astigmatism, a refractive error that causes blurring or distortion of vision, can be more difficult to fit because the shape of the cornea, the transparent surface of the eye, is more football-shaped than the normal round shape. Keratoconus, a condition in which the normally rounded cornea becomes cone-shaped, can also cause problems with fit. Individuals with chronic dry eye syndrome may have difficulty with the fit of their lenses. Far-sighted individuals may need special lenses that correct vision at different distances. A condition called giant papillary conjunctivitis (GPC) can affect some individuals, which affects their ability to wear contact lenses comfortably. Finally, some individuals may need contact lenses after refractive surgery, such as LASIK, when a sufficient degree of correction cannot be achieved.

Your Optometrist Can Provide More Comfortable Lenses

If you have had difficulty wearing contact lenses, your Las Vegas eye doctor can provide a thorough assessment of your corneal shape and provide the right type of lens that will offer the most comfortable wear. If you had problems in the past with the fit of your contact lenses, we can help you receive a better fit.

Contact Lens Fitting Exams

Your eye doctor will use a number of devices to measure your eyes for lenses. The keratometer measures the curve of the surface of your eyes. Corneal topography is used to provide more details about the corneal surface. Pupil and iris measurements are also taken. Special paper and fluorescent dye may be used to evaluate the tear film on the eye surface. Finally, the eye doctor will use a slit lamp to assess the health of your cornea.
