Diabetic Retinopathy

What Is Diabetic Retinopathy?

Individuals suffering from diabetes, whether diagnosed or not, are at a high risk of developing diabetic retinopathy. This condition can damage your vision. The first step, if you have diabetes, is to work with your medical doctor to get the condition under control through medication and diet. Then, it’s important to monitor your eye health for signs of damage directly related to this condition.

In this condition, high blood sugar levels common in those who have diabetes leads to damage to the blood vessels. Specifically, the blood vessels located in the retina become damaged and can swell. In some cases, they can weaken so much so that they leak. In other cases, the blood vessels begin to close. When this happens it limits the amount of blood that gets to the retina, leading to changes in vision and, in severe cases, blindness.

When to Call Your Ophthalmologist: Symptoms of Diabetic Eye Disease

First, recognize the importance of early diagnosis of this condition. It goes without saying that routine eye exams are the most important step. However, you should talk to your ophthalmologist whenever you notice changes in your vision between appointments.  Keep in mind that many people do not experience any symptoms of this condition in its early phases. More advanced symptoms include:

  • Loss of central vision, often noticeable when driving or reading
  • Blurry or distorted vision
  • Floaters, or small spots that are seen
  • Loss of the ability to see color
  • Poor quality vision

If you suffer from these symptoms, your ophthalmologist will conduct a thorough eye exam to diagnose this condition. This exam will likely include dilation. This helps to open the pupils to allow for a clear vision of the blood vessels. Specifically, your doctor will look for new blood vessel growth, changes to existing blood vessels, swelling in the retina or retina detachment.

How Can Your Ophthalmology Office Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy?

When you visit the ophthalmology office, we’ll discuss the options for treatment. In some cases, it is best to simply bring your diabetes under control. However, surgery and other treatments may be an option. Laser surgery, for example, can help to improve vision loss by treating the swelling caused in the retina. It is not possible to cure this condition. However, treatments are available to slow the progression of it and potentially preserve your vision.
