Cornea Transplants with Your Las Vegas Ophthalmologist

To help your eyes focus light, there is a layer over them called the cornea. When the cornea is damaged, this leads to poor vision, and for some people, if the damage is bad enough, they will need to have a DSEK cornea replacement. If you think you might be in need of a cornea replacement, it is important to visit a qualified ophthalmologist today. In fact, if you are suffering from any type of eye vision issue, going to an ophthalmology center will be of the utmost help. Whether you live in northwest or southwest Las Vegas, there is an eye center that can help you determine what steps need to be taken to improve your vision.

Who Needs a Cornea Transplant?

A person who has endured scarring on their eye because of an injury or infection may need to have their cornea replaced. Corneal ulcers can also lead to the need to have a new cornea. Other signs that a person needs a cornea replacement include:

  • Issues caused by prior eye surgeries
  • Thinning or clouding of the cornea
  • Keratoconus
  • Inherited eye diseases

Are There Different Types of Corneal Transplants?

Yes, when it comes to cornea transplant surgery, there are two different types -- full and partial. A full cornea transplant has the longest healing time and is typically needed by someone who has a severe cornea injury. A partial cornea transplant is needed by those who have corneal scar, yet the scarring hasn't affected any of the layers below the cornea.

What is Cornea Transplant Surgery Like?

There are lab tests that have to be performed a cornea transplant, which will check to ensure you are in good general health. Some people have to stop taking certain medicines before the surgery, like aspirin. Usually, these medicines must be stopped at least two weeks before the surgery is to be performed. The day before the surgery, you will probably be required to use prescription antibiotic eye drops as this will help prevent infection. A doctor that performs this surgery will most likely use a local anesthetic, meaning you will be awake during the surgery but you won't feel anything.
