Glaucoma Care at the Brimhall Eye Center in Las Vegas
At The Brimhall Eye Center, our team is available to provide you with outstanding service and attention to all of your vision and eye health needs. We often recommend patients come in at least one time a year for an annual eye exam. One of the key reasons for this is to pinpoint, and whenever possible prevent, the onset of conditions such as glaucoma. Whether you’ve suffered from this condition or believe you have symptoms of it, schedule a consultation in our Las Vegas offers to get the care you need.
What Is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is one of the most common advanced eye diseases. In people with this disease, there is damage to the optic nerve. This nerve, located at the back of the eye, carries information from the eye to the brain, providing information to the brain about what is being the eye sees. Unfortunately, this condition develops without many, or any, symptoms, making it hard to pinpoint. However, it does cause higher than normal levels of pressure in the eyes. This pressure is called ocular hypertension. If it is left untreated, glaucoma can cause peripheral vision loss and then total blindness.
How Your Ophthalmology Team Can Help
When you meet with your ophthalmology team in our office, we’ll talk to you about your condition and any symptoms you may have. We can then talk about the options for treating glaucoma. Glaucoma surgery may be an option for some patients. In other cases, medication and help. We may recommend the use of eye drops that help to reduce the amount of pressure in the eye. The sooner we can provide you with care, the more treatment options we may have.
When you meet with your eye doctor, you’ll talk about several things:
- We’ll talk about the ability for medicated eye drops to help you. Your eye doctor will prescribe these in the early stages of the condition. However, to be effective, you must use them consistently.
- We can talk about any limitations to your vision already present. We can often offer treatments for limited peripheral vision, for example.
- If surgery is an option, we can talk about the advanced surgical options we have available to use. This may include the use of laser procedures that are very safe.
Most importantly, do not delay in coming in to see your eye doctor. We can provide you with glaucoma treatments in some cases, but this condition will progress in many cases.
